Read this first
Your owner's manual outranks this page, every dealer's menu board, and every article on the internet. Intervals differ enormously between a direct-injection turbo four, a hybrid, and a naturally aspirated V6 — and between a car driven 300 highway miles a week and one that does four cold-start miles a day. What follows is the shape of a typical modern schedule and, more usefully, why each item is on it, so you can read your own manual with a sharper eye.
Every oil change: the five-minute pass
Whatever your interval is — 5,000, 7,500, 10,000 miles — the oil change is also the moment the car is on a lift with someone looking at it. Make that count:
- Oil and filter to the manual's grade and viscosity. The viscosity spec is not a suggestion on modern variable-valve-timing engines; the oil is a hydraulic fluid as well as a lubricant.
- Tire pressure to the doorjamb placard, not the number on the tire sidewall (that is a maximum, not a target).
- Tire rotation — usually every other oil change, and the cheapest tread-life extension available.
- Fluid levels: coolant, brake, washer, power steering if hydraulic.
- Visual check: belts, hose softness, weeping seals, brake pad thickness, wiper condition, lights.
Log the odometer reading every time. Two years from now, the question "when did we last do the brake fluid?" has an answer, and that answer is worth money when you sell — see what records do to resale value.
30,000 miles
The first real service milestone. Most of it is filters and fluid checks — cheap, quick, and the point where neglect starts compounding.

60,000 miles
The expensive one, and the one worth budgeting for in advance. This is where fluids that were genuinely fine at 30k are genuinely not fine anymore.

Budget note
The 60k service is where "cheap to run" cars and expensive ones separate. If you are shopping used, look up the 60k and 90k service costs for the model before you buy — it is a bigger long-run number than the price difference between two listings, and a car with those services already documented is worth paying for.
90,000 miles
- Repeat the 30k list, plus anything the 60k service deferred.
- Timing belt, if your engine has one — commonly specified between 60k and 105k, or by age. On an interference engine, a snapped belt is engine-destroying. If you do not know whether your engine has a belt or a chain, that is the single most valuable thing to look up today.
- Water pump and tensioner, typically replaced with the timing belt because the labour is already paid for.
- Coolant, if not done at 60k.
- Spark plugs, if not done at 60k.
- Serpentine belt, and check the tensioner and idler pulleys while it is off.
- Fuel filter, on vehicles where it is a serviceable item rather than in-tank and lifetime.
- Differential and transfer case fluid, on AWD and 4WD vehicles — often forgotten entirely and cheap to service.
100,000 miles and beyond
Past 100k the schedule stops being a calendar and starts being condition-based. The car will tell you what it needs if you are keeping records; without them you are guessing.
- Iridium spark plugs come due around here on most modern engines.
- Coolant, on the long-life schedules that stretched to 100k.
- Oxygen sensors degrade rather than fail outright. A lazy upstream sensor is a classic quiet cause of a 5–10% fuel-economy loss.
- Suspension bushings and mounts — the "it just feels older" items.
- PCV valve, throttle body cleaning, and on direct-injection engines, intake valve carbon. DI engines do not wash their intake valves with fuel; walnut blasting at 80–120k is a known maintenance item on several platforms.
- Automatic transmission fluid at whatever interval you settled on. Consistency beats theory here.
The time-based items nobody schedules
Mileage-based reminders quietly fail low-mileage drivers. These items expire on the calendar:

Why reminders need both numbers
"Every 6,000 miles" fails the driver who does 3,000 miles a year. "Every 6 months" nags the driver who does 25,000. A reminder should carry both a distance and a date and fire on whichever arrives first. That is how manufacturers write their schedules, and it is how Carvico's reminders work — every one has a mileage interval, a time interval, or both.
Severe service: are you on it?
Nearly every manual has two schedules, and most people assume they are on the normal one. Read the severe-service definition — it usually includes:
- Trips shorter than about 5 miles, especially in cold weather (the engine never reaches full operating temperature, so moisture and fuel stay in the oil)
- Extended idling or heavy stop-and-go traffic
- Towing, roof loads, or carrying heavy cargo
- Mountainous or hilly terrain
- Dusty, gravel, salted, or sandy roads
- Sustained very hot or very cold ambient temperatures
A short suburban commute in a place with real winters ticks two or three boxes. If that is your driving, the severe schedule is not paranoia — it is the schedule the engineers wrote for you.
Real interval or upsell? Four questions
Shops are not villains, but a service advisor's menu is a sales document, not a maintenance schedule. Four questions sort it out quickly:
- "Can you show me where that's in the manufacturer's schedule?" Genuine interval items are printed. Engine flushes, fuel-system cleanings, and most "protection packages" are not.
- "What does the measurement say?" Brake pads have a thickness in millimetres. Fluid has a test strip or a moisture reading. Ask for the number, not the adjective.
- "What happens if I do it next visit?" A real answer distinguishes "nothing, but don't forget" from "this is why the transmission fails at 120k."
- "When was it last done?" The one you should be able to answer yourself. A driver who says "18,400 miles ago, in March" is treated differently from one who shrugs — including at trade-in.
Tracking it without a spreadsheet you'll abandon
The best schedule is the one that survives contact with a busy year. Three approaches, honestly compared:

Whichever you choose, the test is simple: could you hand a complete, dated history to a mechanic or a buyer tomorrow? If not, the system is decorative.
Questions
Is the 3,000-mile oil change dead?
For modern engines on full synthetic, yes — it is a holdover from conventional oil in older engines. Follow the manual or the oil-life monitor. The exception is genuinely severe use, where shorter intervals are the manufacturer's own recommendation.
Does using an independent shop void my warranty?
In the US, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act generally prevents a manufacturer from voiding warranty coverage simply because service was done elsewhere or with aftermarket parts. What they can insist on is proof the scheduled maintenance actually happened. Keep dated receipts and a service log; that record is the whole ballgame in a warranty dispute.
What if I bought the car used with no records?
Reset the clock: do the fluids you cannot verify (oil, brake fluid, transmission, coolant), then start logging from that day. Two years of documented history from a known baseline is worth far more at resale than a shrug about the first 80,000 miles.
Do EVs have a maintenance schedule?
A shorter one, not an empty one: tires (which wear faster under instant torque and extra weight), brake fluid, cabin filter, coolant for the battery and power electronics on many models, and 12V battery. Regenerative braking means friction pads last a long time — which makes seized calipers from disuse a real thing worth inspecting for.
How much should I set aside per year?
