Estimated Fuel Cost Comparison (at $3.60 / US Gal or $0.95 / L)
How the conversion formulas work
Fuel economy metrics use two fundamentally different mathematical models:
- Consumption (L/100km): Measures volume consumed over a fixed distance. The formula is reciprocal: as efficiency improves, the number drops.
- Distance (MPG): Measures distance traveled per unit volume. As efficiency improves, the number rises.
| Target Conversion | Exact Formula | Calculation Constant |

| L/100km → US MPG | US MPG = 235.215 / (L/100km) |

| US MPG → L/100km | L/100km = 235.215 / (US MPG) |

Frequently asked questions
What is the exact formula for L/100km to MPG?
Divide 235.215 by the L/100km figure. For example, 8.0 L/100km is 235.215 / 8.0 = 29.40 US MPG.
Why is British UK MPG higher than US MPG?
A UK Imperial gallon is 4.546 liters, compared to 3.785 liters for a US gallon. Because the vehicle burns a 20% larger gallon, the calculated miles per gallon figure is 20% higher.
How does Carvico handle cross-border fill-ups?
Carvico lets you record any individual tank in liters or gallons, and odometer readings in miles or kilometers. The app normalizes all calculations in background storage and lets you view your fuel history in your preferred standard unit.
