How do you calculate cost per mile?
Add every cost of owning the car over a period — fuel, maintenance, insurance, registration, and the value the car lost — then divide by the miles you drove in that period.
Should depreciation count?
Yes. It is usually the largest single line and it is the one people leave out. The difference between what a car was worth at the start of the period and what it is worth now is a real cost, whether or not you have sold it.
What is a typical cost per mile?
AAA puts the average for a new car around 70 cents per mile at 15,000 miles a year. An older car that is done depreciating is dramatically cheaper to run, which is the whole argument for keeping one.
