Why some of these look impossible

Across the EPA's plug-in data, drivers have filed averages like 558 and even 1,174 MPG. Those are not typos. MPG is miles divided by gallons, and a plug-in owner who charges every night buys almost no gasoline — so the divisor approaches zero and the number runs away. MPG cannot describe a plug-in hybrid. That is the whole reason the calculator above works in cost per mile instead.

How this is worked out

Cost per mile is the only metric that survives a car with two fuel tanks:

cost per mile = electric share × (kWh/100mi ÷ 100 × price per kWh)
           + (1 − electric share) × (price per gallon ÷ gas-only MPG)

Your electric share is your daily electric miles divided by your daily miles, where daily electric miles is capped at the car's 44-mile rated range per charge. The kWh figure is EPA's combE, measured at the wall, so charging losses are already inside it — you are not paying for them twice.

Every figure on this page comes from the U.S. EPA's public fuel economy database and its web services, both federal public-domain data. We add no estimates of our own. Where a number is missing it shows as a dash rather than a guess.
